FOR AN ACT ENTITLED, An Act to prohibit school lunch shaming.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA:
Section 1. That the code be amended by adding a NEW SECTION to read:
Regardless of whether or not a student has money to pay for a meal or owes money for earlier meals the school shall provide a United States Department of Agriculture reimbursable meal to any student who requests one. A school may not require a student throw away a meal after it has been served because the student is unable to pay for a meal or owes money for any earlier meal. A school may not publicly identify or stigmatize a student by requiring the student wear a wristband or handstamp or require a student to do chores or other work to pay for any meal. This Act applies to all public and private schools that participate in the national school lunch program or school breakfast program.
