All streams in South Dakota are assigned the beneficial uses of irrigation and fish and wildlife propagation, recreation, and stock watering. The classifications only designate the quality at which the waters are to be maintained and protected. Streams listed in this chapter may or may not be open to the public. Access to private property must be obtained from individual landowners.

Unless otherwise indicated, the entire course of a named stream is the segment with the designated use. The beneficial use classifications are as follows:
