An Act to require the waiver of animal adoption fees for veterans.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of South Dakota:

Section 1. That chapter 40-2 be amended with a NEW SECTION:

An animal control agency, as defined in § 40-2-8, and any humane society that has contracted with a county or municipality for purposes set forth in § 40-2-5, shall waive any fee charged in connection with the adoption of a dog or cat by a veteran, upon presentation of proof of military service and honorable discharge. Nothing in this section requires that fees be waived for an individual veteran more than once in a five-year period.

For purposes of this section, the term, fee, includes administrative fees, and charges for veterinary services and procedures, medications, food, insurance, and identification.
