An Act to require a school district to provide dyslexia screening.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of South Dakota:
Section 1. That a NEW SECTION be added to chapter 13-37:
Each school district shall provide dyslexia screening to each student who exhibits potential indicators of or risk factors for dyslexia. If a screening indicates that the student has characteristics of dyslexia, the school district must provide age-appropriate, evidence-based intervention strategies to the student.
The South Dakota Board of Education Standards shall promulgate rules, pursuant to chapter 1-26, establishing program guidelines for dyslexia to assist teachers, administrators, and parents in:
(1) Identifying and assessing students with dyslexia;
(2) Identifying age-appropriate, evidence-based educational services that may be provided to a student with dyslexia; and
(3) Identifying potential indicators of or risk factors for dyslexia.
