The department may approve an alternative method which has detection limits, precision, and accuracy that are at least equivalent to the specified method. Approved methods must quantify total petroleum hydrocarbons by integrating all detectable peaks within the time period in which at least 95 percent of the recoverable hydrocarbons are eluted.

Soils contaminated with waste oil must be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons by EPA method 418.1 as published in EPA's "Methods for Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes," 1983.
