A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION, Recognizing June as Move Over Awareness Month and urging drivers to slow down and move over for stopped vehicles.

WHEREAS, 2020 was only three days and eight hours old when South Dakota had a first responder killed on the side of the road; and

WHEREAS, according to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute during 2019 in the United States vehicles struck and killed forty-four emergency responders who were working various types of roadway incidents. Among those killed included eighteen law enforcement officers, fourteen tow truck operators, nine fire or emergency medical service responders, and three mobile mechanics; and

WHEREAS, there is a need for drivers to be educated on the dangers of failing to follow move over laws:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Senate of the Ninety-Fifth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the Legislature recognizes June as Move Over Awareness Month and urges drivers to slow down and move over for stopped vehicles.
