A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION, To honor and commend Dr. Barb Brockevelt for her services to the University of South Dakota and contributions to the State of South Dakota.

WHEREAS, Dr. Brockevelt received a B.A. in Occupational Therapy from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, MN, an M.A. in Anatomy from The University of South Dakota, and a Ph.D. in Occupational Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL; and

WHEREAS, in a career spanning thirty years, Dr. Brockevelt served at Children's Care Hospital and School in Sioux Falls, USD Center for Disabilities, Center for Autism and Related Disorders, and Native American Reservation Developmental Clinics. Dr. Brockevelt joined USD's Occupational Therapy Program at the South Dakota Board of Regents, then served as the Director of the Ph.D. in Health Sciences program. Her practice experience includes pediatrics, skilled nursing, adult developmental disabilities, and consulting with facilities serving children and adolescents with visual impairment; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Brockevelt joined USD as a graduate assistant for the Center for Disabilities while completing her M.A. in Anatomy and helped draft the successful proposal for the USD Occupational Therapy Program. She joined the USD Occupational Therapy Program full-time in 1994, assumed the position of Program Chair in 2000, and served as the director of the Ph.D. program in Health Sciences. She has taught biomechanics and kinesiology; research in the entry-level occupational therapy doctorate program; and leadership and capstone in the post-professional occupational therapy doctorate program; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Brockevelt's scholarship interests and publications are in the areas of meaningful occupation and participation of children, feeding, and the scholarship of teaching and learning, and she has given numerous presentations at regional, national and international levels, including presentations at the Congress of the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) in Sweden and Australia; the Multinational Qualitative Study "Children's Understanding of Well-being--Global and local Contexts" in Germany; and the International Society for Child Indicators in Montreal, Canada; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Brockevelt's professional service on a national level includes membership on the advisory board for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy and onsite chair for the Roster of Accreditation Evaluators of the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, for eight years. In 2008, she was named a Leadership Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF). In 2013, she was named to the Roster of Fellows of the American Occupational Therapy Association. This award is granted in recognition of occupational therapist members of AOTA who with their knowledge and expertise have made a significant contribution to the continuing education and professional development of members of the Association:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the Ninety-Fifth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that the Legislature honors and commends Dr. Barb Brockevelt for her services to the University of South Dakota and contributions to the State of South Dakota.
