Introduced by:     Senators Olson (Ed), Gray, Hunhoff, Koetzle, and Peterson (Jim) and Representatives Dennert, Heineman, Pederson (Gordon), and Putnam at the request of the Constitutional Revision Commission  


         FOR AN ACT ENTITLED, An Act to  make biennial salary increases for legislators consistent with annual increases for other state officials and employees.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA:
     Section  1.  That chapter 2-4 be amended by adding thereto a NEW SECTION to read as follows:
     The salary of each member of the Legislature for each regular legislative session as provided by §  2-4-2 shall be adjusted biennially by the rate appropriated as the across-the-board increase to base salaries of state employees under the general appropriations bills for the past two fiscal years. The first adjustment for this salary shall be based on the salary in effect on July 1, 2007. The first adjustment shall take place on January 1, 2009. Adjustments after the first adjustment shall take place at the beginning of each new term of legislative office every two years after that date.
