BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH DAKOTA:
Section 1. That chapter 13-3 be amended by adding thereto a NEW SECTION to read as follows:
Beginning on July 1, 2012, the Board of Education, prior to adopting any standards proposed
through the Common Core State Standards Initiative, a state-led effort launched by state leaders
through their membership in the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and
Council of Chief State School Officers, shall conduct, over a period of two years, at least six
public hearings. The purpose of the hearings is to give members of the public the opportunity
to provide input to the board on whether the standards being proposed through the initiative

public hearings required pursuant to this Act shall be conducted in locations determined by the
board.
