Introduced by: Senators Heinert, Nesiba, and V. J. Smith and Representatives Bordeaux, Perry, and Pourier
A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION, Honoring Clint Johnson as the recipient of the 2021 Legend of ProRodeo award and for his outstanding representation of South Dakota on the national stage.
WHEREAS, Clint Johnson, a Spearfish native and rodeo legend, began his career around age ten at a 4-H rodeo. After gaining traction at both the high school and collegiate level, Johnson launched into the professional arena; and
WHEREAS, Johnson showed exceptional talent in saddle bronc riding, qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo eleven consecutive years. During those eleven years, Clint won four world championships; and
WHEREAS, Clint Johnson rode consistently on the world stage, always placing in the top six. His efforts claimed the distinguished Calgary Stampede Rodeo's bonus three times, totaling $150,000, as well as the National Finals Rodeo average; and
WHEREAS, as a result of his accomplishments, Johnson earned a spot in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Throughout his decades of accomplishments, Johnson maintained great humbleness and even stated that he wanted to stay under the radar; and
WHEREAS, his unwavering dedication to rodeo continued after his riding days as he served as vice chairman of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association; and
WHEREAS, in November 2021, Johnson claimed his biggest accomplishment. He was named the 2021 Legend of ProRodeo at the fourteenth annual Wrangler Gold Buckle Gala and now sits among fifteen other legends, including Bob Tallman and Jake Barnes; and
WHEREAS, Johnson continues to be active in the rodeo community by teaching and offering clinics to younger riders. He now owns a small ranch in Texas but is still a firm supporter of South Dakota rodeo; and
WHEREAS, the rodeo legacy in the Johnson family continues as Clint's daughter, Janie, is an accredited rodeo reporter and barrel racer:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the Ninety-Seventh Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that Clint Johnson is a legend in rodeo, creating a positive impact while representing the great state of South Dakota.
