A LEGISLATIVE COMMEMORATION, Honoring the life and service of Dr. Arthur W. Zimiga.

WHEREAS, Dr. Arthur W. Zimiga, a member of the Oglala Lakota Teton Nation, is a globally known Native American educator with over thirty years of experience in education and business. Dr. Zimiga earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and sociology from University of Sioux Falls and a master's and doctorate degree in education from Harvard University, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honors society; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Zimiga has taught at the University of South Dakota, Harvard University, Oglala Lakota College, and University of California at Los Angeles, and lectured at numerous other universities, conferences, and workshops. He has an extensive background in Native American culture and a specialty in Lakota culture; and

WHEREAS, over the course of his career, Dr. Zimiga has worked extensively with federal, state, tribal, and private agencies. He has supervised over 3,000 employees at various locations and worked with 17 tribal chairmen in the Great Plains Area and six state governors. Those who are close to Dr. Zimiga can confirm that his memorable leadership skills, sense of humor, and can-do attitude are next to none:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT COMMEMORATED, by the Ninety-Seventh Legislature of the State of South Dakota, that Dr. Arthur W. Zimiga’s life and service to the State of South Dakota is honored and commended.
